About Hospice: Hospice: Hospice provides medical and emotional care to people who are terminally ill. They provides end-of-life support that focuses on comfort, pain management, and emotional well-being of ill individuals. Hospice services can be provided at patient’s home, nursing facility, or dedicated hospice center by a skilled team including doctors, nurses and social workers. Unlike treatments that aim to cure disease, hospice care is designed to relieve pain and manage symptoms, while providing emotional, spiritual, and psychological support to both patients and their loved ones.
Hospice Care is end-of-life care for patients and their families. Hospice focuses on controlling pain and symptoms. Hospice care begins in the final six months of life and is usually provided in the patient’s home, but it can also be provided in a hospital or nursing home. Hospice care is a Medicare benefit. Hospice focuses on caring, not curing. In most cases, care is provided in the patient’s home but may also be provided in freestanding hospice centers, hospitals, nursing homes, and other long-term care facilities. Hospice services are available to patients with any terminal illness or of any age, religion, or race.
Services provided by Hospice to patients and families:
  • Manages the patient's pain and symptoms.
  • Assists the patient with the emotional, psychosocial and spiritual aspects of dying.
  • Provides needed drugs, medical supplies, and equipment.
  • Instructs the family on how to care for the patient.
  • Delivers special services like speech and physical therapy when needed.
  • Provides bereavement care and counselling to surviving family and friends.
  • Makes short-term inpatient care available when pain or symptoms become too difficult to treat at home, or the caregiver needs respite.
